Earlier this week, a story screened on Seven Sharp highlighting how lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, intersex and other diverse students exist, but schools in NZ typically have nothing in place to support them. At Newlands College, we are lucky to have teachers and students who are being proactive about this. This story is a checkpoint – not a journey or a destination. It captures that a lot of work has gone into where we have arrived, but also it is clear that there is much more work to do.
Congratulations to all the students that were involved. There were many more that were interviewed that didn’t make the story because of its tight duration. The feedback has been humbling and fairly overwhelming with messages streaming in from all over the globe. The ripples have spread a long way and certainly the impact of this story will be immeasurable in many ways.
