Kyran van Asch (11WG) has qualified for the 2015 NZ squad to compete in Texas, USA in December at the Valeri Liukin Invitational Gymnastics Competition. He has just returned from representing Wellington in the NZ Gymsports Nationals for the 7th year running, where he came 5th overall in level 8, including 2nd on vault, 3rd on Floor, 4th on Parallel bars, and 5th on Rings.
Kryan is now fundraising for this international competition which is in Texas, USA. His givealittle page can be found here and his story – in his words is below:
I began my gymnastic career at the age of 5 in 2004, starting in the UK at a gymnastic club called Pegasus gymnastics, training with two Romanian coaches. My parents friends recognised my natural upper body strength and suggested we try the sport.
I travelled back to New Zealand with my family in 2008 where I carried on my love of the sport, moving between different gymnastic clubs because of lack of MAG (Men’s Artistic Gymnastics) coaches. I finally settled at Kapiti Gymsports in 2011 with my current coach, Gavin Snowsill.
It has always been my dream to travel internationally through my main sport, gymnastics and to be able to have the chance to compete at the Commonwealth games, maybe even the Olympics. My dream is slowly, but surely, coming true.
I believe I have improved so much in the last two years on all apparatus and hope to continue improvement in the next two months. I have increased my hours from 10 to 17 hours a week as I am now training at two different gymnasiums.
