This Tuesday, Newlands College sent two teams to Hutt International Boys’ School to compete in the Wellington Interschool Chess Tournament. This was the third tournament this year and the toughest one so far. It consisted of six 30+ minute games against high schools from all around the Wellington region and ran on throughout the entire day. In the end, Newlands took out third place with 15 points and was one point shy of earning an invitation to the national interschool chess tournament.

However, Newlands College took out first place in the Wellington Chess Power tournament earlier this year. We received four invitations for one team of four players to compete in the national Chess Power tournament later this year in October, along with a fifth invitation for holding the best female player award second year in a row. Newlands College will be sending Glen Williams, Dre Urwin, Connor Graham, Spandan Mukherjee, and Stella Lu to compete for the Chess Power Championship Trophies.

Newlands College’s chess club has been slowly growing in numbers, and everyone is welcome to come along on Monday Lunchtimes in A14.
