On the 12th July, our group went to the Kapa Haka Regionals, held at Te Rau Paraha Arena. We were the second out of seven groups to perform. We spent a lot of time working on our bracket and finally performed our finished product. Our tutors Turei and Grace spent their weekend putting their skills and effort into the winning bracket.
The night before the competition we spent the night together at Newlands Papakainga and woke up the day of the competition eager to perform. We drove to the Arena and got into our changing room. 30 minutes later it was our turn on stage, nerves creeping up along with excitement, we start walking to the entrance onto the stage. We walk up the stairs with the little pet talk our tutor said beforehand in mind, we go into our semi-circle to start the bracket. Seven items later we are off stage and our schools are doing a Haka for us, thanking and supporting us for the performance that they have witnessed.
After we are dressed into our outfits, black on bottom and white on top. We watched the other groups perform and awaited our scores. At the end it turned out we won the waiata-tira. The tears, sweat and blood we put into our bracket paid off. Accepting fourth place overall with a happy face and a new dream to place in next year’s regionals.
