From the Classroom: Drama

Drama is part of the arts rotation in Year Nine. Every student spends a third of the year in one of music, art and drama. The current drama students have just wrapped up a unit on team building and trust. The learners all found out about what the expectations were in the drama room so they were able to make and accept offers, work together as a team, and feel comfortable ‘performing’ in front of others.

Part of the is about making machines. Students worked in a variety of groups and explored ways of using their bodies, movement, space and voice in order to create a machine. This helped them to work collaboratively and explore some drama elements and conventions. As a end of unit experiment, both current classes tried out making whole class machines where they joined one at a time to add a movement to make an imaginative and creative class machine. Below is what they came up with:

Having completed this unit they will now move on to improvising and devising as they build confidence and cooperative learning skills in the drama context.
